When I pictured the blue waters, lush green tropical trees, and the warm sands of Hawaii, I knew I was packing to be a boho beach girl (read goddess). The thought of a place like the small town of Hana in Maui made me think of art, music, harmony, and being free! Once we chalked out our plans, I knew it was the perfect time to get my boho on.
Beach-boho style is chic, beautiful, and so simple to achieve. It is a striking combination of fabrics, colours, tones, and hairstyles. Adapting this style for a beach vacay means lightweight ensemble outfits that you can stuff in your bag when you go for a dip and beach-ready accessories adding colour and personality to the style, of course!
Needless to say, all beach-boho outfits start with swimwear. You will be layering, so pick colours and patterns that reflect the sun in the water. If you don’t want to experiment far too much on the swimsuit, don’t worry; I have the perfect boho-mermaid look for you.
Finding a beautiful cover for your swimsuit is key to any kind of beach look. After looking through many covers and not finding anything I loved, It occurred to me that cover I had in my mind was actually something I owned. I decided to recycle an old Lucknow kurti. The material was light, transparent and the intricate thread work gave it an embossed look. Once I froze on the kurti-cover, I had to go all Indian-boho, so I wore a pair of jhumkas, colourful anklets and flowers in my hair to feel like a mermaid who was washed over from Kanyakumari.
This was my favourite look not only because I got to show off some lovely pieces of handmade jewellery by my mother, but it also gave me a chance to use my Indian wear on a holiday that I never thought I would pack anything Indian for.
Having soaked into the boho theme meant sticking it to it for date night too. I teamed a plain blue maxi dress with a pair of long tassel earrings, a chunky finger ring, and my latest obsession of fashion tattoos. For casual walks on the beach and sightseeing, I wore jacquard and floral prints with head chains, flowers bun pins, and anklets to add a touch of romance.
Now that you know how to achieve a boho beach look, the trick is to create your very own signature boho style. Keep in mind:
You can be as creative as you want. Boho is one of the most free-spirited looks. You define your boho style!
Combine unusual colours and patterns.
Remember the boho look is not forced. It is individualistic, easy, and the trick is to create harmony with each outfit!
